the long journey home

we left Ethiopia on may 20th. it was extremely emotional to say goodbye to this beautiful country, ayla's birth country, but we were also excited to bring her home, reunite with xander and begin our new life together as a family.

we got to Bole Airport early...very, very early! We did it in hopes of requesting and receiving a bassinet/bulkhead seat for the trip home. when we got to the ticket counter, we were disappointed to find out that there were none available. oh well. it was going to be a long trip regardless. we spent a lot of time sitting in the airport. we had many Ethiopian people approach us and want to hold ayla. out of respect, we obliged, but it was hard to hand her to strangers! once it got closer to our flight we went through the second security check and into the area where we would board the plane. the man at the counter gave us better seats, but we didn't realize at the time that we had gotten the bassinet we had hoped for...yeah!

just as on the way to Africa, we were delayed leaving addis. it was so frustrating, but one of the families we met at the guesthouse was on our flight, so at least we had some company. ayla was as good as gold. she didn't complain once and was happy to be held or to hang out in the baby carrier.

when we finally took off, we settled in for the long flight. ayla did so great travelling...better than I did! she slept most of the way. we were so happy to finally land in Dulles, but due to more delays, we ended up being stuck there for 12 excruciating, long hours. Mommy was in tears by the evening, but ayla was happy as a clam! we finally took off for home and landed in Indiana after almost 50 hours of travelling. Thank goodness for our dear friend Laura and her sister, who came down to drive us home from the airport. we were almost a day later than anticipated, but at least the journey was coming to an end and we were headed home.

Passing the time in Dulles Airport

She was amazing! Slept right on the chairs in the boarding area.
